REVIVING ROBIN follows the recovery, restoration, and re-release of Robin (1979), a lost and little-seen independent feature, by the CT-based film preservation and distribution company, Vinegar Syndrome. Archive Director Oscar Becher oversees the process, sifting through the film’s original 35mm negative and outtakes, while uncovering the story of its production--a self-financed labor of love by set-designer turned writer/director Hank Aldrich. Featuring interviews with the film's leads, Monica Tidwell and Lee Dorsey, and musician/composer Kip Carmen, REVIVING ROBIN is a tribute to auteur filmmaking at its most independent.
But the film’s other focus is Vinegar Syndrome itself—the only company of its kind with both a dedicated film archive and a digital restoration lab. Becher and his colleagues are safeguarding the analog photochemistry of the past and making it available to the public through the technologies of today. To that end, REVIVING ROBIN is a snapshot of old school cinephilia in the digital age—something at once both oxymoronic and oddly romantic.
